Michael Chandler is the Executive Chef of Grafton Group’s flagship property, Grafton Street Pub & Grill. A culinary professional boasting nearly 15 years of experience, Chandler puts his unique spin on the signature comfort food classics that Grafton Street has served to Harvard Square for twenty years.
Prior to joining Grafton Street, Chandler served as executive chef at Grill 23 & Bar and executive chef at Brasserie L’Oustau de Provence in Manchester Center, Vermont, which was recognized for excellence in French cuisine by Travel + Leisure during his tenure. Chandler’s culinary career has taken him to France, New York, Florida and now back to New England.
Born and raised in upstate New York, Chandler did not find his way into the culinary world until later in his career. After being honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps, Chandler attended the University at Albany, SUNY, earning his degree in Economics and Public Policy. He worked as a budget analyst at Albany’s budget office before realizing his true passion was in the kitchen, and left the corporate world to enroll at the acclaimed French Culinary Institute (FCI) in New York City. During his time as a student, he had the opportunity to intern at high-caliber restaurants in Manhattan, including Daniel Boulud’s Café Boulud and Mario Batali’s Babbo.
Upon graduation in 2003, Chandler moved to Lyon, the gastronomic capital of France, to further hone his culinary skills and experience for the next eight months. He then returned to New York City and began his professional career at the three Michelin-starred Jean-Georges restaurant, before being promoted to sous chef at Mercer Kitchen. He eventually worked his way up to executive sous chef for the opening of The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges inside the Madison Avenue Mark Hotel.
Seeking new opportunities, Chandler left Manhattan for Nantucket in 2013, where he spent a summer at the Great Harbor Yacht Club before moving to Vero Beach, Florida, to work as a private chef for the Busch family. After moving to Boston and briefly working at Legal Harborside, Chandler assumed the role of Executive Chef at Grill 23 & Bar in July of 2016.
When he is not in the kitchen, Chandler enjoys exploring Boston’s neighborhoods, going to Red Sox games, and spending time outdoors kayaking the Charles River in the summer or apple picking in Vermont in the fall.
